Painful tendon or ligament? In groin area
Every few days (or once a week), I have been having a problem with hard pains that I think might be with tendons or ligaments in my right groin area. Certain ways that I stand or twist... such as getting out of a car... or pivoting... sometimes cause pain that feels like my leg is going to fall off at that point. Sometimes it feels like a small snap or popping sensation, but other times is only pain that might extend into the upper front of my leg. The problem is not constant, and just when I think it is gone, it happens again. In some ways, it almost feels like my leg is trying to pop out of socket, but it never has. I do not have any hernias.

Any suggestions? I can't think of anything else that these symptoms might fit, so if you think of any possibilities let me know.

I'm not asking for medical advice, just wondering if others have had anything like that happen? Not sure what type of doctor I should make an appointment with, or even if I need to since I don't want to pay a bunch of money to hear them say to use heating pads... What are some ideas that I could try at home to see if it helps? Such as stretches? Or would I be better off trying to rest it and not moving it so much?

Again, I only want suggestions and know that most people are not doctors...

Any time I get any kind of sharp pain I usually associate the pain with some kind of nerve irritation. I would suggest that you rest the area instead of doing any kind of stretching to make it worse. You could have pulled something in that area and not realize it. Just "baby" yourself for a week or more and see if that helps. I'm also of the ilk that I don't like to give a doctor another month's car payment when I don't have to. Last time I saw a dr for anything was 6+ years ago. Only "drug" I take is aspirin. You could try Mineral Ice on that area also to help relieve the pain. Hope you feel better soon.

I would guess that you pulled a muscle. That happens frequently to people who exercise and play sports.

If you forget about it, it will probably go away in a week or two. That's what I always did. :)

If I were to describe what is happening to me right now, it would be the same words you used. My leg feels like it is going to come out of its socket and the pain is at the groin area and extends slightly to the upper thight with crackling noise when I turn it out. I used to have pain on the outer hip due to bursitis, and now I think this new pain has taken the place of the old pain because I was walking funny to avoid the bursitis pain. I can't win... the worst feeling though is the feeling that it's going to fall out of socket. Did you ever find an exact answer?

Wow, I don't know if you still see this link, but I googled this just this morning because I have been having this same issue for about 25 years and it's to the point where I'm finally trying to get something done. It's almost like you're paralyzed when it does "pop". Sitting on bleachers for a length of time without standing seems to irritate too. Mine has "popped", I hear this snapping noise and it's very painful. I can feel it when it starts to almost go and I can quick stop my movement to avoid but it's still sore. I have been seeing a chiropractor for "tune-ups" for years about once a month and that along with learning what not to do has helped, but since February it has been really bad and now I'm looking in to it. If you're still able to receive these answers, let me know and maybe together we can find an answer.

Did anyone ever find the answer to the first post? I would describe my pain exactly the same. I finally had to take off work because the pain got so bad.

I have the same problem, and I had hip surgery for bursitis and snapping hip syndrome, and think it might be caused from walking differently for so long. Did anyone find an answer!

I have the same problem for several months and can't figure it out. Hips were out of line and I had several chiropractic adjustments and corrected that. I thought I had a groin pull and I think that went away. When I sit for long periods the pain shoots down my right thigh almost to my knee. Certain positions tweak the area and cause a mysterious and stifling sudden pain. When I sit and open my legs apart I get a similar sensation. I f***ing hate it. Oh and I have the crackling sound too.

I like to run during the summer I run 4 to 5 times a week so because of the weather I had to run indoors (treadmill) so I decided to run barefoot so I feel this kind of electrical shock through my right leg and I stopped running but the after a few days I felt this strange pain on the upper left by my thigh but I keep going to the gym and even tough it up when it started to get worst (bad decision! ) so the pain got really bad so I have to go to the doctor and he diagnosed tendinitis so I haven't been able to run for the two weeks the pain has been less but still there so hopefully it will pass if I keep taking my anti inflammatory that I was prescribed and taking it easy.
    Wish me luck!!

I have the same problem, but I know what mine is caused by. I have SI Joint Dysfunction from pregnancy (even though my pregnancy was three years ago) and so my pelvis is being pulled a bit out of place. I'm okay when I don't exercise, but when I do I get this pain in my groin area. I've been told that there's too much tension on the ligament there. It's acutally called slipped crutch syndrome related to SI Joint Dysfunction. I'm so discouraged by it! I'm hoping if I take a couple days off every time it happens that it will get better once I get stronger. Good luck to all of us!

I have similar symptoms in my left groin area except my problems span out over 3 years now! I don't really relate to the popping or cracking sensation some of you talked about but I definitely feel pain and stiffness after hard exercise. Also a general dull ache most of the time. I played football at semi professional level and work manually as a Painter and Decorator. Initially I had trouble with my right groin and I thought it was just a typical groin strain. At first I done the usual R.I.C.E treatment and received some physio and after a couple of months I was back training. However after a month of hard training it flared up again pretty bad. My club then helped me out financially to be sent to Sports Injury Clinic for further investigation. There I was told to rest again by another physio and treated for a condition called Ostitis Pubis which involves inflammation of the pubic joint. She recommeded I go see my GP to try and get an MRI scan. However getting one of these on the NHS is near impossible for such a condition as I was still able to work albeit I was suffering through it. I was given an X-ray however this never showed much. After 2 or 3 months rest symptoms improved however as I increased my training, symptoms started developing in my other (left) groin. This persisted over the coming months as my right groin (initial injury) got better. Upon a visit to another physio he recommend I pay privately to see a groin/hernia specialist to determine whether I had an inguinal hernia present or suffered from sportsmans hernia (hernia associated with athletes with no hernia visibible). Upon consultation with the specialist he couldn't find any hernia but recommended me for a double hernia operation involving placing a mesh in both groins in an effort to strengthen both areas even though I never had a actual hernia present. I went along with his opinion and with an 85% success rate I thought this may be the answer to my problems. I got the operation later that year on the NHS. In theatre they found a small hernia in my right side which they patched up with mesh as well. However after the recommeded rest period I was still struggling with my left groin and pain at the region of the hernia they found.I was given no follow up physio from the NHS and had to pay privately again for advice on how to manage my rehab.I was back working after about a month but I would say it took me a good 6 months to get over the operation fully and even at that I have been left with problems. The pain in my left groin persisted and pain at the region of my hernia comes and goes. I did get back playing football for a couple of months but not at the same level. When I did play I suffered for days after and needed painkillers. I couldn't train as much and needed plenty of rest in between. My doctor then referred me to see another groin specialist this time on the NHS. He decided I should try steroid injections over the course of a few months to try and contol any inflammation and pain. However I can't say they done much good if atall. I decided to rest again for a couple of months and give football another go. Maybe admitidlly I rushed my training a little this time and once again I broke down at the first hurdle in my first match back with my left groin! So once again after a few months rest and another injection I got back training. I took it slow this time and built it up over a few months. As I done this I seen a difference and was very close to playing again. However as I upped my training I started to feel the pain in my left groin again and it only got worse. So currently I am back to square one resting again and weighing up my options. I try to keep fit otherwise with my physio exercises, stretching, swimming, light workouts and the odd run on grass but don't know if I'm doing the right thing. However I hate doing nothing and feel it would just stiffen and tighten up more and if I did. The last specialist I seen recommended my next step would be to see a Orthapedic Surgeon to see if my tendon was affected and the possibility of cutting my tendon to relsease pressure on that area. I am currently waiting for an appointment to see him which could take up to 4 months so again its just another waiting game. Through all of this I have managed to work (apart from time off after hernia op) however there are some days I have suffered with certain things (i.e heavy lifting or ladder work). I also feel the strain if I have too much sex! I know there are worse things in life however I am at my tethers end with it all. I am only 25 years old and would hate to think this is something I'm stuck or could get worse in later life. I would love to get back playing football regularly but I don't hold out much hope. Its good to hear some people with the similar problems and to know I'm not alone out there. I would appreciate any feedback, advice or anyone with similar problems. Thank you

Did you ever get relief? I have had this intermittantly for 3 - 4 years. Lately it is worse and I even have trouble rolling over in bed. The pain is severe and feels like a tendon is tweeked. Sometimes I almost feel like my leg is slightly out of the hip joint.

Because I have the Same symptoms and had any test under the sun it seems and having a flair up right now. I had to join the post. I'm stealing the initial post:

My symptoms are exactly the same. Pop or cracking sound when bending or twisting. Especially when I get in or out of the car and its definitely the groin area. I've been trying all sorts of stretches to fix the problem. I recently bought an Inversion table, where you hook your feet in and hang upside down. Similar to gravity boots but safer and easier.
Anyway the trick I've found to fix my groin is to hook ONE foot in and hang upside down. While I'm upside down I gradually relax my leg muscles and I can feel it stretching out all those muscles and tendons. Use a bit of heat cream too but be careful or you'll end up singing that song 'Great balls of fire' in a very girly voice lol

Ok, it's me again. Lori Marie. I had surgery almost 2 years ago. They found that I had a labrum tear and that my tendon needed to be lengthened. After the surgery it took a long time before I could lift my left leg very far off the ground and hold it there. I still have the occasional flare up in the groin area. I talked to my doctor a few months ago and he thought we may want to try injections. Bottom line, find a doctor that will help you. I found one and he's terrific and well versed in this type of surgery.

I can sit fine. I can stand fine. But going from sitting to standing has been extremely painful. I figured out the pain was a ligament or tendon right where the leg connects to the pelvis. It is definitely not a muscle; it feels like a ligament or tendon. Someone suggested cold compress on it. And stretching. Any other suggestions?
It isn't too painful now, but a couple of weeks ago it was really bad. Could barely walk after standing up but after a few minutes the pain went away. What do you think it is?

Just took my son to see a orthopaedic surgeon for this very same thing. We live in Canada so we had x-rays, bloodwork, 2 ultrasounds and an MRI over the past 6months. Finally got in to see the specialist! He didn't even need to see any of the reports - he knew right away based on the description of the "popping" and "snapping" sound and the pain association. He called it a snapping tendon. It is a tendon that is larger than normal and this tendon comes around the hip and is connected to the bone in the hip. The problem is that certain activities make it go outside the hip bone and then "snap" back into place. My little guy is 11 and he said it will probably work itself out otherwise the only other thing he suggested was physio.

I don't have the popping or snapping sound; just a soreness where the thigh/ligament meets the groin.
