What should I do with my black hair . What color should I dye it?
I have black hair and it looks boring. I don't have many hair color choices. I know I have to dye it a shade of brown. I just need help with the shade of brown I should dye it. Does anyone have any ideas? Also I don't really like highlights that much and I want something that won't make my skintone look darker. I already have brown skin and I want something that makes my skintone look kind of light and pretty.

Have you spoken to a professional hairdresser? Without seeing you, it would be hard to suggest anything just from what you've said, but the pros are trained in how to match color with skin tones, eye colors, etc. to make a boring color into something that will make you "pop". (My own natural color is a deep ashy brown that makes me look like a marshmellow, but a pro suggested a golden blonde to make my skin look less pale and bring out the golden highlights in my brown eyes without looking fake. I get compliments on my eyes whenever I refresh my color without anyone catching on that my eyes look brighter because I just colored my hair... )

So your saying I should go to a salon? But most people are white and they might not be sure with what to do with my hair. And I am not sure what salon to go to and if it is any good.

If your skin is brown, and want to color your hair, opt for chestnut, honey brown, caramel or auburn shades. Most trained hair stylists can work with all hair types and hair textures. However, if you're reluctant about letting a Caucasian hair stylist work on your hair, then you could go to an African American hair stylist to apply the color for you.

Would it be a bad idea if I did it myself? Or have my mom help me out.

Personally I think you should dye it a warm brown like chocolate brown. It would make your complexion seem warmer too.

Sweetie, since your hair is naturally black, you will need to pre-lighten your hair to a level that's lighter than the color you want and the deposit the selected color. If you use a single process permanent color, it will make your hair orange or brassy. It would be best to go to a salon and have this coloring process done. They may be able to achieve your desired color without bleaching your hair by using a higher strength volume peroxide developer. But if it isn't an option, you can go to a beauty supply store and choose a high-lift hair color. At-home high-lift colors are tricky and can leave brassy tones in your hair. If you still want to color your hair at home, be sure to let your mother help you apply the color application.

I think you should have a hair stylist do hidden highlights so you won't see them on top of your head instead the top part of your hair is sectioned from middle of your eyebrow on both sides and not touched with highlight. Then they should go through and slice highlite 2 on sides and 2 on back, I would go with a shade of red, if your hair is black that's going to be the easiest and look the best. This process comes out very nice. To find a hairstylist call around ask if they have a color specialist who can work with ethnic hair and explain your hair type, also look on the internet for examples of how you want your hair print it and bring the pic with you. You can also try on different color wigs to find a color you like.
