Any and every treatment should be done with consulting his doctor, he has too many issues to try anything. His main doctor should be aware of all his medications. For many people with serious health issues, sleep will be short and more times of sleep needed. He will need to try to take naps and rest more often

Does he trust his doctor? Does he tell the doctor all this?
If I were he, I would be wondering about paradoxical effects sometimes seen in anti-depressants and sleeping medications.
But of course his situation is far too complicated to discuss online.
