Dog won't stay in kennel then keeps crying when I go inside
I have a 2 and a half year old husk x labrador. Very cute and energetic but problem is he won't go stay in his kennel or go to sleep without me (just me-not my other family members) standing in front of the kennel. I have tried putting toys and treats into the kennel and it became more confident in staying in the kennel (didnt want to go in at all when we got him). I tell it to stay and praise and treat him when he stays but as soon as I go inside and close the door he comes out of the kennel and moves from door to door while whining. He does this all night-no sleep whatsoever and also thorughout the day. He hasn't slept for days. He is very tired bcoz he does this everyday but still he does this... When I am inside and he can see me his whine is not as loud but it is continuous. I have been getting sick from lack of sleep bcoz he does this and he might get sick if he doesn't stop doing this as well. We take him on plenty of walks and swims in a day. Also we went to the vet and they say there is nothing out of the ordinary so don't know what to do now. However kennel inside the house or crate is not an option. Any tips? HELP ME!!

Why is crate inside the house not an option ? If you can't see the problem, then you should not have a very social animal. He wants to be a part of your life in the house, with you. The dog loves you.

How often is he in the house with you? He is an entirely outside dog?

I have to ask the same question as Tickle. Why is a crate inside not an option?
I may be a little (ok a lot) biased because I don't believe in outside dogs unless they are working dogs.
To me, a dog is part of the family and should be treated as one.
I know a lot of people opt to keep their dogs outside all the time but to me it just seems like the dog is more of an ornament or security system, not a pet.

One has to take the climate into consideration as well. Where I live the cold is not condusive, healthy, for any dog to be out in a kennel. We have gone down to - l5 c at times over the last two weeks. Far too cold for an animal to be outside. I have never done it, in any case, my pets are in the house with me and part of the family.

If you cannot welcome your dog inside your house, then you probably shouldn't own a dog. Dogs are pack animals... They belong in groups. Dogs do not do well on their own. Your witnessing this first hand.

What he is displaying is separation anxiety. He has attached himself to you and cannot go on with out you. This happens a lot when a dog has been abandoned before. This could possibly get worse... He could become destructive, or decide to take off. He's not getting what he thinks he needs at your house, so he will find it somewhere else... Like I said... if you cannot welcome the dog into your home and be apart of your family, then maybe you should reconsider owning a dog.

And I think this person is referring to an outdoor dog run.. not a crate... which is pretty bad in itself. It's a proven fact that outdoor, kenneled dogs are not taken care of as well as indoor dogs.

He was an entirely outside dog when we got him and he hated being inside even when it was raining he loved the outside more. We did put the kennel inside because he always slept in the rain but he just goes in then out of our house. Then he just kept whining to come back inside. However every time its inside, he barks and asks to be let out over and over again-not to go to the toilet or anything. So that's what's confusing for me... if he wants to be inside or out?

How old was he when you got him, huskador ? Pretty well established being an outside dog and not socialized well enough I gather. Not good. You are going to have a lot of patience to get him socialized again. Little breaks in with you, he has bonded with you I can tell from your original post. He doesn't sound like a happy dog right now because he doesn't know what is expected of him. In out out in, etc. Both breeds are very intelligent and bond well. It is a shame that you didn't get him as a puppy. Please be patient with him, you will eventually have a wonderful loyal dog but he needs to be with you inside, at least most of the time. I hope you can eventually have him sleeping in the house. I wish I could help more. It is up to you and him.

Well we only just recently got him. Maybe a month or two. He hasn't been like this all that time. Just recently... We take in on lots of walks and to dog parks and all so he is socialised with other dogs and people. He loves them both. He also used to live with rabbits and cats... I wonder if its because he's lonely at home when he's outside... We did bring my friends dog over once to look after it and he was fine... but I guess just more training and more time inside. Will definitely get a dog door though.
