    Need passion, need a hobby
I really do wish I had some hobbies but I've never become enthralled in something. Ever since I was young I just wasted my spare time with video games :o

It's a bit sad really, there isn't anything I'm really passionate about. I just go out and drink beer and see mates in the meantime. I don't do any sport, don't do anything creative, don't do any kind of psychical activity, don't play music, just don't do anything.

It's sad, and I really need to get something going in my life.

The question is though, how do you when you're not interested in anything? I'd like to start some kind of physical activity but I hate embarrassing myself because I'm a bit goofy and uncoordinated and a bit slow when it comes to learning...

Does anyone have any advice what someone like me can look into doing and how to go about doing it?

I wouldn't mind being able to

I suppose I'm asking... How do you become passionate about something? How do you obtain a passion?

Okay... all I got to say is... passion.. comes from your heart.
I would first try meditation... think about things you would try.
Go on andverture that you do crazy things, like swinning on a tire, or jump in the water like
    You never touch water.
Or do what my sister does... breath calmly, in and out, don't hold back your breath!
    Hope it works out gooooood!

This isn't an easy suggestion but I would try on anything and everything. What you don't enjoy, don't do again. I wonder though... this isn't you holding you back out of a sense of needing to be perfect, is it? Because if it is, then I would advise that you delibertately go make a bunch of mistakes, not ones with permanent consequences, LOL just, well, goof something up on purpose and get over that stifling perfection while you do! Yell "I am flawed, I am flawed, I am flawed just like everyone else is!" while you do it, LOL. Very liberating!

    I know how you feel.

Sometimes its even for the simple reason of small talk at a party or a job interview "So tell me what are your interests/hobbies" (crickets)

I believe passion for something is actually obtainable, It might sound silly but if you do something again and again and then some more you can start to really enjoy it and miss it when your not doing it.

Ive been looking for a hobby for ages. And well, to be honest knitting, karate, upholstery, yoga and soccer just aren't my forte.

I think you should embrace the things you love such as video games and if anyone asks, tell them you're a snake charmer (you better read up on snake tamers as there might be follow up questions)

If all else fails, go bowling - it's a sport but you don't need to be that co-ordinated.

    Good Luck!

I am in somewhat of the same boat as you. I mean, I have hobbies, like I LOVE to play softball and swim and do watersports, but those are spring/summer things and in the winter I just feel bored, and boring, a lot of the time. And, as Coffee said, I think it makes me feel worse because I feel like I don't have anything to say, like when I talk to people on the phone. When it gets cold, it gets depressing and you feel like watching TV is a waste of time and that you should be doing something productive, or at least something that you enjoy doing, but it really does close a lot of doors... well, those outdoor doors.

As for finding a passion, whose to say that video games aren't your passion? Yes, you may feel like it's something dorky, but not everyone has the same tastes, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you like video games, maybe you're into the fantasty genre or something, where there's lots of swords and stuff, I don't know. If you are, then maybe try on Renaissance Faires or go to conventions. Take spin-offs of things that you already like. It doesn't matter what you do, just make sure that you love doing it. It's your life, do what you will with it.

You have a passion! BEER and your mates. Get more into your friends, who they are what they love. Listen when they talk and drink your beer and write about the things you observe while you out talking to people and having a beer. You can write an entire book of thoughts about the people you know and how they think. Studying people and drinking beer is not a bad passion at all.

In order to maintain a passion you have to find a passion.Try different things out and see what works for you.Don't be embarrassed or self conscious.

What sounds interesting? Even helping out via community service can be beneficial.I don't know if you are located in the US or not but there are programs such s big brothers big sisters which is a youth mentoring organization.Or helping a little old lady can be rewarding.. don't knock it until you try it!

    Hello,
I sure would like to know how you "become" passionate about something. I have friends who are nuts about golfing, yoga, cooking, etc. I don't have anything I'm passionate about. I'm glad you posted, because I was starting to think I was the only person in the world who didn't have a "hobby." If you come up with something, would you let me know?

first of all be honest with yourself. Don't assume that you should love what everyone else loves. You CAN make yourself really enjoy something by becoming good at it, however like with most people those "passions" fade fast. Take older guys for example... you've probably heard of a "middle aged crisis"... all men eventually go through it. They want to buy something completely random because they USED to love it and want to see if the flame is still there. 90% of the time its not... true passion comes from the heart... and bygod if video games is your passion... write your perfect video game... write the characters backstory from beginning to end. Write the settings... describe the games every little detail... and write it.. in a journal. After writing it get several copies made and try selling it. If not as a video game, try a publishing company. The reality is if you pour your heart into it you'll treat it like your "baby" and you will truly be passionate about it. I can bet you in 20 years when you read your journal or pooossibly play your own video game, you'll realize what passion is.

I am passionate about history... war... empires... ancient stuff... not many people realllllly into that... but I write and read about it every night.

I highly suggest taking on one thing you wish you could do, but find very difficult. The hard part is getting past the embarrassment. You will find it challenging, and with practice will eventually improve. I have a great respect for myself and others who are willing to humiliate themselves and keep trying to gain a NEW skill. You might never be a gold medalist but that's not the point, is it? You will find yourself with much more coordination and more healthy if you tackle some sort of physical activity. I've personally wanted to try kick-boxing but have put it off for years. My sport of choice, however, is hiking. It's one that doesn't take much coordination.

Very old thread to which the original poster hasn't returned to in four years.

Time to close it, I think.

    Thanks!

I have found a great hobby what kept me busy and above all found it a great chance to be able to help out lots of people as most people love the TV these days and watch dvds, I sell to them titles that are just not released or commercially available on dvd while bringing back these lost treasures to make available to viewers and buyers around it keeps me busy and is my hobby and I'm very passionate about doing this, what makes it all worth while is not the money it is the comments you get from people stating they are so appreciative that I could get them these rare classic programmes which they cannot find anywhere at all and have just been lost too many and we sell these at extremely affordable prices as all there paying for is the equipment such as discs, boxes, artwork (ink printing), postage and packing my time and the content on the dvds I supply free of charge, now the only thing with this is it is deemed illegal while it is common to duplicate dvds I am running a service which the media would state even programmes not released have a form of copyright law on them therefore they can prosecute me, the only thing I have been good at in life and it kept me busy and now I cannot continue trading as it is against the law and as they say if you cannot do the time don't do the crime, I also suffer from anxiety, depression and drink dependency so it is hard for me to go out and socialise so I was left with this hobby and I don't feel I'm interested in anything else and I am true TV addict and I wanted to help me as well as others to make these rare classic programmes available to people but my new passionate hobby has been ruined by copyright law but what else can I do? I don't go out much and with my condition of social phobia I can't work or do anything else productively, I used to love painting as a kid and produce something creative nobody is going to appreciate or buy something like this especially saying I may have been OK at this as a kid but not now and to be honest I don't enjoy painting anymore just like a lot of hobbies you can just lose interest but I used to love the creative side of producing my own covers and artwork on discs to make it look good and to think lots of people have something what was reproduced by myself even if it is rare dvds. The reason I have now stopped doing this is I have heard stories from other dvd collectors selling on the likes of ioffer and eBay etc and they have been closed down by trading standards and the federation against copyright theft so I feel it would just be a matter of time before they catch up with me so it needs to stop to be on the safe side and count myself lucky I have not been vindicated but now...
I'm left with no enthusiasm passion determination or the will to do anything else I'm now in my late 30s and with me not being very sociable I find the outside life very uncomfortable and fearful and uneasy not sure which road to choose to get more quality of life any suggestions anyone?
