    220V 3-wire dryer receptacle
I just moved in and the dryer won't heat. I'm trying to troubleshoot so the first thing I checked is the receptacle it's an old 3-wire. One leg shows ~238V the other shows ~116V is that normal?

The 238 volts, across the two hot legs is fine, you should see the 116 across each hot leg to the neutral. So sounds like the volts at the outlet is fine. May be a problem inside the dryer, probably a defective heating element.

Both measurements were from hot to neutral. So it seems a wire has gone astray. Thanks for your help!
