Company names starting with letters only always come before proper company names. Letters in alpha first, then proper names after:
    ABC Roofing
    H & H roofing
    J & J roofing

    Hart Book Store

If you have St. John Brown, do you include St. and if you do, do you spell it out (Saint) or go by St. or do you skip it and go by name in order to file in alpha?

Below is the way I've always filed and I've worked in an administrative environment for over 20 years.

    ABC Roofing
    Art Supply Company

    H & H Roofing
    Hart Book Store

    J & J roofing
    Just for Kids

    Hope this helps.

You file it as St. John Brown.

You don't spell it out unless it is already spelled out.

You would file C.B. Hart & Sons

After any entry that has just alphabet letters before a name.

    Anytime Systems
    A. B. Systems
    A & B Systems
    Carrathurs Bros.
    C.B. Hart & Sons
    C & W Hart & Sons

You just ignore the periods within the name of the firm when filing.
