How to find list of countries to emigrate to if a convicted felon
What resources are there for a convicted felon in the United States to emigrate to another country (ie, Malaysia or Canada.) I'm interested in which countries will allow the immigration of a convicted felon currently finishing his time.

    Thank you.

I do not know of any country that would have such lax Immigration Laws that would facilitate this request. Could you expand on what you mean by finishing your time? What were you convicted of and how long ago was the conviction?

If you are not comfortable providing that information on the board please feel free to PM me.

Thanks, BMI, for such a quick response. Currently, the person is serving time for possession of child pornographic materials found on his computer. He has 2 years left on his prison term. He wants to know which country (if any) will allow him to immigrate to because he does not think that he will be able to find a job, let alone, live a somewhat normative life in the US.

I believe his wish is to go to Canada or Malaysia.

Again, any input would be appreciated.

Malaysia I cannot comment about, Canada I can.

If your friend has a sentence of 2 years or more (which they obviously do) than he would be inabmissable to Canada due to criminality. Your friend's situation would require him/her to be granted a pardon before they may make an application to come to Canada. In Canada, if you are convicted of an offence that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years or more than your friend would be eligible for rehabilitation in 10 years (thats 10 years from the end of his jail term AND conditions) Unfortunetly, if they have 2 years left and many conditions upon release the math would work out to roughly about 14 years before he can even attempt to consider Canada as his destination. If the maximum jail time for his conviction is 5 years than he must wait 5 years before he is deemed rehabilitated.

The sentence he got seems very high for possession of child porn, though that is without knowing the circumstances of the case. Sorry if this information is not what you wish to hear but it is the law.

Only in VERY extreme circumstances could your friend enter Canada with that type of conviction, to qualify he would have to have a well-founded fear of staying in the States. Your friend would have to have a very, very concrete fear of death or injury especially coming from the states as the U.S is considered a safe country in Immigration terms.

    Hope this helps.

With all due respect this dude is blowing smoke out his butt. Some of what he said is accurate, SOME, but for the most part it is dead wrong. First off a pardon from the country you reside in, will have absolutely nothing to do with if Canada accepts you into it's country. You are still required by their law to provide your jacket, and with a pardon the charge is still in your jacket. The only way to have your jacket cleaned is through expungement, and we all know that the US will not just expunge a convict (they want you to suffer).

As this dude said, there is a chance that a person may apply for rehabilitation and the Canadians web site states that this may be sought after 5 years after your probation/parole has finished. This is not saying you're going to be accepted, however, that is when you can begin applying, and I believe you can continue applying concurrently every other year after that.

There is a lot more information which can be told about this subject, but this isn't my forum and I hate to waste my effort here. However, if you want to find the true answers and resources for felons then I'd suggest felonsforum.com • Index page

No offense to the webmasters of this site, and normally I wouldn't just come and plug another site on someone else's forum, but when I read the above quote I wanted to provide more accurate information, and there is much more accurate information, including sources, on the listed site, regarding felons.

    Good Luck!

He should stay in the US so he can observe the impact that he causes in peoples lifes with his sickness...
