I came across a 5 dollar bill from 1953. It says series 1953 A. It has a red seal and red serial numbers. There is a red star in front of each serial number and the letter A after. The names are Priest and Anderson. Treasurer and Secretary of Treasury. The serial # is... star 08287916 A. It has a fold right down the center of Lincolns head, edges look good. It looks a little used but in all I would say in good condition. Just wondering if its worth anything. Thanks

On top it says "United States Note" to the left of lincolns picture over the # 5 it says " this note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private" thanks for your help I have read some of your other posts and you really seem to know this stuff. I'm going to give you some informatio now ::: " the star is placed by the serial # when there has been a change in the design of the bill ( FRONT OR BACK ) OR there has been a change in ,one or both signaturesor when during printing a bill is messed up someway and theu catch it, the note is destroyed and same serial # is used for another new one ,but a STAR is placed with the serial # , If a piece of paper money comes back into the TREASURY, and is messed up ( TORE <SOME OF BILL GONE < ECT>ECT> that bill is destroied and new one made with same serial # but has the RED STAR ::::
Back in early 1800's several pieces of paper money was first used with the red star around the border as design decorrations , then latter was used as a design to indicate what I just wrote above< ON bank notes the seals were RED Serial # were RED , Some of them had different designs that were RED ON front and back sideTHE number of the bank was Red. This is part of the history of this type of paper money:::
OUT THERE there is collectors that collecting the star notes is quite a hobby in it self,and to them they are very vauleable, more so to them then to just a reg. collector , A lot of the time it is because they are trying to fill up a set to complete it ( THE SET ) ::::
When it comes to selling ( coins or paper money, It is not the value put in the books alone, It is just how valuable is it to that person,and how much are they willing to pay for the item, AND DOES HE WANT IT TO COMPLETE A SET OR SOMETHING< ) Lets use this as an example - I have a Lincoln wheat penny collection and I have all but say a 1953S penny and you have one , it will complete my collection of the LINCOLN WHEAT PENNYS . Take your time FBE. I have googled and yahooed and used a search engine that uses 4 OTHER search engines and I can't find a doggone thing out about this bill. I have found a lot of stuff but so far nothing that looks like this one. So take your time, its not going anywhere and most likely will end up in a protective cover in storage with some old coins I have. I love to look at these things and wonder who held them, where they had been etc. Thanks for your help so far!

Hello everyone, I have seen that this post has gotten a few views. FBE is helping with my question BUT if anyone else knows ANYTHING about this bill please post an answer. Are you certain it's a 1953 note and not a 1957 note? The reason I ask is that (Robert B.) Anderson didn't serve as Secretary of the Treasury until July 29, 1957. He succeeded George M. Humphrey who had served since January 1953 until replaced by Anderson.

I also have a star $5 red seal United States Note from 1953, series A and the signators are Ivy Baker Priest (Treasurer of the U.S.) and George Humphrey (Secretary of the Treasury).

Leo- I think you need to take anotheer look. I have several different books dateing back to the mid 50's and they all give ( PRIEST - ANDERSON ) on the $5.00 bill in 1953 A
