    Zoology field? Elephants?
    Hey I'm also a senior in high school and I've lowered my fields to either marine bio or zoology, so I'm trying to get some info on the different ways you can go.. in zoology I want to help hurt animals and nurse them back to health in captivity and release them, also I loooovve elephants and would really like to work with them in a zoo setting maybe? But I don't want to be just a keeper.. help!

    Yep, Elephants are neat in a large and leathery sort of way.

    There was a similar question a few days ago. Basically the suggestion was that you contact a Zoo and talk to them about the kinds of jobs they have and what training is needed. You school counselor may be able to help you with this.

    My own opinion is that, if you are particularly interested in helping sick/hurt animals, you should consider getting a veterinary degree.

    Yes. You could become an exotic animal veterinarian. There are a limited number of veterinary schools in the United States, so check those out and see which ones would allow you to specialize in wild animals--not just dogs or cows. See what the requirements are to get in and work to fulfill all those requirements. And don't forget to work or volunteer at a zoo, circus, or other place where you can come into contact with real elephants!

    I strongly suggest, you get your 'sea legs' first. I was YOU years ago. I started at local shelters, and took on more as I felt confident and comfortable. What I was totally unprepared for is putting your heart and soul into something sometimes for weeks-then finding out it died. I got over that by realizing that the ones I had helped are out there, and the ones I could'nt I finally learned to be grateful that they weren't suffering. One animal at a time, they ALL count. So, even though it can be sad, I worked up gradually and had to learn this as my mind could absorb and understand it. We all go at our own speed. Depending on the age limit within your state, check into volunteering with A Rehabber, or a Wildlife Hospital. That way you see that whole lesson from radiographs, to release. And all the love, work, and stink that goes into it. You'll know when your ready-to go on from there... Good luck to you, we need all the help we can get-so do THEY!
