This is one I have used.

http://globalpdf.com/pdf2word/

It isn't free, but there again what is nowadays. The easiest way is to scan a pdf and use OCR software to recognise the words. Scan the pictures or diagrams into paintshop/photoshop.

Here's a bunch of converters, one as cheap as $26.

Seems there are freebies for creating and editing PDFs, but I haven't been able to find a freebie for converting from PDF.

This is the one I use: http://www.primopdf.com/

edit: crap, just noticed you wanted PDF --> Word, that program I mentioned doesn't do that. If you are lucky and the PDF settings are correct you can copy the text and paste into Word.

Not free, but....

It's not free, but if you can afford it, Acrobat Professional will allow you to SAVE AS, and select the file format.

The "quality" of the conversion will depend on how the PDF file was initially generated. Something created from MS Word will convert back without too much trouble. Something that was scanned to PDF may not give you very much editable text if saved as a Word doc.

I know the Pro version is $400+, but it is pretty powerful if you work with PDF files all the time.
