    Prolonged bleeding
    I have been bleeding since January,became anaemic at 86 and even on northiesone meds still some bleeding.GP want to fit a Mirena coil but I have read so many scare stories re this that I don't want it.What else can help?

    'At 86?' You can't mean age 86.
    We can't possibly advise regarding such a complicated problem, and a complete history is needed. Chronic bleeding (menstrual) can be a sign of different conditions, from endometriosis to hyperthyroid. See another doctor for a second opinion. (If by 'northisone' you mean nortisone, which I think is the UK version of the US cortisone, then yes, it is time to stop that and find the underlying cause of the bleeding, not throw pills down your throat. Were you ever on birth control pills?)

    Hi 3ronan1,

    I agree with joypulv... it is important to find the underlying cause of the continued bleeding in the first place. It may be hormonal, so sometimes using a hormonal form of birth control may be tried first.

    If you are referring to norethisterone, that itself can cause irregular bleeding. Sometimes going on a birth control pill, particularly progesterone only, may aid in slowing or stopping the bleeding, but other times it won't. The Mirena would be another option for using a progesterone type contraceptive that can also sometimes control the bleeding. Some women even stop having periods.

    Did your GP have you get a scan done to see if a possible cause could be seen? If not, that would be something to consider, along with ruling out other possible conditions as joypulv mentioned.

    Sorry 86 was my blood count not my age! Normal should be between 120-160.I'm a nurse myself so already have a good knowledge.All other bloods normal and pelvic scan normal,prolonged bleeding is due to hormones only,but there is so many bad reports re Mirena.I've stopped taking the Norethisterone,which is a contraception pill.Thanks for reply.

    I have all the basic bloods and pelvic scans,everything is normal,the reason for the bleeding is purely hormonal.Totally fed up as this has been going on since January.I have decided to contact GP and get referred to Gynae for further help and advice.

    So how old are you actually ? And you are in the UK, correct ? This changes our knowledge a bit because you are on an international site.

    Are you post menopausal, is that why your doctor wants to put you on Mirena?

    If you are post menopausal, why then do you need anything to regulate your system?

    Still more information needed. We can't diagnose, advise, or do anything for you here. HRT or hormone replacement therapy is recommended by most doctors, but it comes with horrendous side effects.

    Hi,I'm 49 live in Scotland and must be perimenopausal.All hormone bloods normal,pelvic scan normal.I have had bleeding since 5th January and it will only stop if I take the norethisterone which is a progesterone pill.This has side effects as does the mirena coil which I don't want to try.HRT not required as no other menopausal symptoms.

    When you see the gynae, ask about alternatives to the usual hormonal options. Many women will find effective changes using more natural supplementation and even diet alterations.

    Do you fear being menopausal? I was not suggesting HRT because of the negative side effects. But you are in the menopausal age bracket.
