hey, i'm going to start taking this pill... but i have no real clue about it's side effects... eg will it make me put on weight? does it help acne? my doc isn't the most helpful when it comes to information. is this the best birth control pill i can take?

There is no reason for your doctor to not explain the side effects - you most likely did not ask. Maybe you were too shy about asking. So ask you pharmacist - if you cannot do that - read the drug information given to you. Your doctor and your pharmacist are the two professionals that can help you the most. If you obtained the birth control from a Family Planning or County Health Agency, then whoever gave those to you should take the time to explain side effects.

Some of the side effects include headaches, nausea, bloating, breakthrough bleeding, and breast tenderness.
