    Well, I would assume it would greatly depend on the nature of your visit. Is the visit just going to be a routine check up, or are you going for some type of symptoms. When you can answer these two questions, we could better give you some points that she may address.

    Are you going for a pap smear? If so, this is some info for you;

    A Pap smear is a simple test that can help prevent cancer of the cervix. During a Pap smear, your doctor takes a sample of cells from your cervix to be tested. The cervix is the part of your uterus (womb) where blood flows through when you have a menstrual period.

    To take the sample, your doctor will put a special instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This helps open your vagina so the doctor can see your cervix and a sample can be taken. Your doctor may gently clean your cervix with a cotton swab and then collect a sample of cells from your cervix with a small brush, a tiny spatula or a cotton swab. This exam only takes a few minutes.

    Hope this helps answer your question.

    Your first appointment will be pretty basic. You'll get the standard weight, temp and blood pressure check, and they will ask you when your last menstrual cycle was. Then the nurse will give you a paper gown and a drape (like a sheet, paper as well) and tell you to remove all your clothes, put the gown on with the open side at the front, and the drape unfolded over your lap. She will leave the room while you do this. Shortly thereafter the doctor will come in and begin the exam. You will be given a breast exam, followed by the pelvic. For the pelvic you'll lay back on the table, scootch to the end, and put your legs in the stirrups. The doctor will move the drape out of the way and begin the exam. He/she will probably tell you everything they do before they do it. It is painless, but you might feel a little bit of pressure. The whole thing is over in about three minutes. After the pelvic is over the doctor will probably ask you about your sex life and tell you about the importance of safe sex.

    It is a very, very quick appointment, but so important to have as a woman. It's really, honestly, no big deal, so try not to get worked up about it. You are doing an excellent thing by taking control of your health.

    Three things to remember:
    1. Don't lie! Tell your doctor the truth, no matter how embarrassing!
    2. You have the right to ask for a chaperone if you want one. The doctor will not be offended.
    3. Relax! You're doing a good thing, and it will be over before you know it!

    Good luck! :)
