Depression & mood swings after having baby. How to COPE?!

Asked Jun 12, 2012, 09:51 AM — 6 Answers
Ok, so as I mentioned in my intro, I just gave birth to a baby girl four days ago. It's been 15 years since my last childbirth & I have forgotten just how much I can NOT stand the many random bouts of crying, despair, & horrible sadness I'm going through! When I'm not bawling, I'm laughing at anything that seems funny or enjoyable. Or, I sit down & stare off not knowing what to do with myself usually until my thoughts lead to something I find I can't cope with & it starts over again. I HATE IT!

Besides getting happy pills from the Dr, or going out to a support group (because going out in public is something I don't wanna do feeling crappy) is there ANYTHING that could help me feel 'normal' again soon?? A home remedy of sorts? Herbal supplements? Some sort of activity, exercise...Just something someone has heard of or tried that HELPS me feel not so damn sad & moody. At least lessen the time it's gonna take to get over this?
I will greatly appreciate any helpful feedback. Thank you!

Post partum depression can be a serious issue as you seem to realize and not easy to overcome on your own. There really is no other way but counselling to help you with this, and probably medication to assist.

You won't get happy pills from the doctor. They will be a med that will readjust your brain chemistry that is all off-kilter right now. You won't take them forever, but long enough to get things right again in your life and to smooth out the wrinkles. Like tick said, counseling is vital.

Thank you very much, tickle & wondergirl. Guess I will have to do just that if I want to be over this. So dumb that this happens to many women.

After reading your introduction I note that you gave your baby up for adoption. That is a very selfless act and you should be commended for doing what is right for you as well as that baby!

Now, with that said, since you gave her up, counseling is in order to get over this hump. It's not going to be easy, but it's extremely hard to do on your own.

J_9,

I appreciate your comment, thank you.

About the counseling, it IS highly recommended to have then? I didn't even consider it & just assumed over time I would heal from giving her up. Do you know what goes on in a typical session or how many are required?

I may look into it, hopefully I can find something close & inexpensive.
Thank you again =]

Basically it will just be "talk therapy" discussing your decisions and how you are handling this with some assistance as to how to begin to heal emotionally.

Did you use an adoption agency? If so, they should have offered and provided you with counseling.
