    Depo Shot
I just started the depo shot about 5 days ago... so far all I have heard about it is horror stories... I am glad to report that so far I haven't had any side affects... only a little more sensitive... but then again it hasn't even been a week yet... I kind of just got on it with out asking any questions... I would appreciate some feedback... what are the chances of getting pregnant while on it... also how long can one be on it without causing too much harm to their body?.
    Thank you!!

After depo you have to wait until your periods become regular before you are able to conceive again. Most people don't conceive for like a year or a year in a half. My cycles have been regular for about 9mths and I am still waiting to have a baby.Everybody is different but I don't know anyone who conceived faster than that.

I think this should be yous last shot. Its poision I only got it once and it made me bleed the whole three months and its supposed to be expired I was supposed to get my next shot on valentines but I feel it kills your chances of concieving. I'm still bleeding I get really ban back pains and all the other side affects. I don't want to scare you but you shouldn't get it again its just some friendly advice. It takes people a year to get PRGT when they had the shot one time. Imagine what its doing to you on the inside. Bleeding a lot can't be healthy especially for almost four months now I have been bleeding.

I believe that it really does kill your chances of having a baby i was on it for almost three years and after being off of it for a couple months i have had unprotected sex many times and still haven't got pregnant and it really does mess up your system i think it should be banned because it messing with your periods and makes you gain major weight i gained 60 lbs off of it and it is horrible and it reduces your chances of having children:(

Ok lots of extremely harsh words here, depo has its good and bad points it is the most affective at stopping you becoming pregnant but please make sure you are aware of all the side effects both now and when you stop there are many of them and I do know quite a few people who didn't have any at all and conceived pretty much straight away but on the other hand the bad out ways them I'm afraid.
Anyone who has received the shot on a regular basis and wants to have children should most definitely be aware that it will possibly hinder your chances and take at least a year if not more to conceive after stopping the shot.
I still think it was the best choice for me to have even though it took me 2 years to conceive just remember we are all different.
There are also many help groups out there on the net that are all extremely useful.

I have been off of the shot now for about 6 weeks, after being on it for 3 years, I gained about 40 lbs on the shot and never had a period. Now that I am off of it I have lost about 10 lbs. in the last 6 weeks, but I believe that it because I have been bleeding for the last 5 weeks. I do not have an appitite, I am very tired all the time, and I am like a train wreck(the littlest thing makes me cry). These things should not happen  I think that the shot is really not good for you. I would not get on it again nor would I reccomend it to anyone!!!! Crystal

My dad put me on it when I was 13 and I was only on it for six months, but it took two years for me to get a period again. When I was 17 I tried it again, but that time I bled for six months straight and I lost about fifteen pounds. I have done a lot of reading on depo shots and in some women it has made them unable to have children, but everyone is different. It may be good for you, but I would never take depo shots ever again. Good luck! :)

I don't know where some of you people get your so called facts from about the depo! If I was beginning or ending the shot without any knowledge, you all would scare the mess out of me! First of all, EVERYONE'S body is different! You don't need to be telling people all of these horror stories! The shot isn't as bad for some as it is for others! When I first began the shot 3 years ago, I didn't ever gain any weight, nor did I have any hormone problems! I haven't had a period in the whole 3 years, but that isn't a problem to me! I am now trying to get pregnant. I got off the shot August 24th. It may take me a while to get pregnant, but when God feels it is the right time, then it will happen. Yes, it may take some a year or more for it to happen, but I have also seen some people get pregnant within a month or two. I just wish that before people start writing what they THINK is right, they would read up or talk to a physician before they start trying to SCARE people because they think they know it all! To all the women out there that are getting on the shot or coming off the shot & trying to conceive, I wish you ALL the luck in the world, but PLEASE don't listen to some of these know it alls & go & talk to someone that does know the information you are trying to find out. Thank you! :)

A lot of the things that people have said here are well known side effects of Depo Provera, thats where they are getting their facts from. Haven't you ever read about the side effects of depo?

These people are sharing their personal experience with depo, and that is not a crime. You are right, everyone is different, but I see more horror stories with Depo than I see happy ones.

On another note, this thread was started in 2003, and was last replied to about 6 months ago. It's a pretty good chance that the OP doesn't even have this problem anymore.

Yes. I realized the dates, because one of those women is one of my friends! Like you said, everyone has their right to an opinion. That's what I was doing, giving my opinion! And YES I have read up on the depo..DUH...I was on it for 3 years. I am not going to write to people about something that I haven't ever read up on. Yeah, the depo has some scares, but what doesn't these days. The pill, the shot, YAZ, nuva ring..ETC...I am just voicing my opinion just like everyone else has. I just don't like it when people try & tell others what to do when they don't have the right. Yeah, they have the right to voice an opinion, but NOT to tell others what to do; especially when someone is scared to death already because of something they read that isn't true. The reason I wrote that was because my friend was one of the people that posted something and got scared from what someone told her. She found out that I was on the shot & I talked to her about it & we went to talk to a physician about it. So, no, I don't feel bad for what I wrote because I mean every word of it. I don't care how long ago it was posted. I just read it & decided I needed to post something back.

I didn't say you should feel bad for it, not at all. I was just saying that people's personal experience is the majority of what is posted here. It doesn't make them wrong, they are just trying to spread the word about the possible risks, that's all.

I'm sorry your friend got scared. That probably wasn't anyone's intentions.

I have been on the depo shot for about 3 years. I was an extremely little person I weighed about 98 lbs before I was on the shot and could never gain weight I couldn't ever get up to a 100lbs. So when I got on the shot I know weigh 120 I really do believe it was from the shot I recently took myself off it this month was the month I was suppose to get it and I didn't go I'm switching myself to the birthcontroll pill seasonique :) I loved not having periods and with seasonique you have 4 periods a year! I also have heard some really bad storys with the depo shot with people having miscariges :(

I do agree I was on the depo shot from 1998 until 2005 when the doctor said it would take me a year to conceive if not longer so stoppped the depo and got pregnant 3 months later and had a beautiful baby girl in 2006 then got pregnant again 6 months later and had a boy in 2007 then went back on Depo it is now 2011 and I stopped my depo in Aug just because of the weight gain and bone loss.

SO I would agree everyone's body reacts differently to the depo shot but when the time is right you will get pregnant just be glad you can get pregnant because there are a lot of girls that can not have any kids at all.

I was on depo from 1998 to 2005 got off because the doctor told me it could take up to a year to get pregnant well it took me less then 3 months and I had a beautiful baby girl in 2006 then a precious baby boy in 2007 went back on depo until Aug of 2010 I got off because of weight gain and bone loss.

I agree everyone's body reacts differently so keep positive it will happen just don't keep thinking about it and it will happen!

I have been on Depo for at least 13 years, am I the only one concerned about why all of a sudden they are saying you should not be on depo for more than 2 yrs? What are they not telling us is my question. I too have all the side effects but I cannot function while having a period so this was an option back then. Something is going on, they are not telling something... 13yrs in my body and now you want to warn not to be on it longer than 2 yrs! WHY?

With all these side effects maybe we should start a class action lawsuit, too many horror stories are the same. I am seeing a psych, because I cannot control my feeling and emotions and I am taking so many pills to stabilize my mood swings because they are getting way out of hand and I never thought for a second that this is coming from a form a birth control. I am very angry and it has to be true because too many of us are going through the same things. I have a problem with drug companies and providers using patients as lab rats.

Didn't read any of the comments already posted but I can tell you my experience. I was on depo for about 2 - 3 years. Loved it. First couple months really screws up your periods and you may have it really randomly or not at all. After about 6 months to a year I stopped having my period all together (which I loved). I would say the only side effects would be it is very bad for your bones and is known to cause osteoporosis if taken in lengthy periods. I was young so my doctor said it was fine but he would not recommend using it for a long term birth control. I took extra calcium vitamins. It was 100% effective for me, Ive read some stuff that its like 98% effective, and there's only around 1 in 100,000 that get pregnant while on it. The only reason I actually went back to the pill is because I sort of missed my period and having that sign that - no I wasn't pregnant but yes I am still capable of having babies haha.
