Blood clots during heavy bleeding period

Asked Apr 14, 2004, 09:40 AM — 52 Answers
Is it normal to have large blood clots during the heaviest
Bleeding period

Summary The answers to this medical question range from "nothing to worry about" to "see your Gynecologist". Several women report having similar experiences as 'millie', large blood clots during the heaviest part of their periods. Others have reported going to the Gynecologist and being diagnosed with Polyps which require removal. While others report there being nothing unusual.

It is strongly suggested that you go to your Gynecologist to ensure there is nothing unusual going on to cause your larger blood clots from passing, especially if this is something new. It is probably nothing to be concerned about, but get that reassurance from getting a check up.

Yes this is normal. But if your concerned its always advisable to have your physican perform a ultrasound test to make sure everything is ok. But honestly, clotting usually occurs during the heaviest time of ones period so its nothing to worry about.

If its something that had never happen before and and just suddenly happen then there could be reason for concern. If it is abnormal for you then I would suggest getting seen by a doctor, for heavy bleeding with blood clots could possible be signs of health problems. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm 25. I have had 2 kids and 1 miscarriage. I have always had bad periods but none like the ones I started having last year. This past year has been hell. It only takes 30 min to go through 1 super plus Tampax pearl. I have used 2 at 1 time with a pad and still bleed straight through. I have sharp lower abdominal pain and sharp lower back pain. I bleed clots that's it clots in the shower when I'm using the rest room. There huge they started out like golf ball sized and now its more like 4-5 gold ball size at 1 time. My husband poor man I had to show him because I don't think he realized how much pain I was in. But he saw me go through 3 tampons and change of clothing within 1 hr. So he was like do I need to take you to the er. I was like no this happens every month. I don't think this is normal. I'm getting on insurance next week. I haven't been to a doctor in 4 years because of no insurance. But I feel your pain your life is built around your period at least for the first 3 days. Hope you get help I'm going to I'm not going to live with this anymore it hurts and its FREAKY!

Oh man. I'm 16.. I started when I was 10 and since then I have had really bad and painful blood clots. The second and third day are the worst. I had anemia when I was 10 but I don't know about know. Could I have cervical cancer?

I'm 17 and yesterday when I got my period (I've had it since I was 11) I had such bad stomach cramps that I passed out from the pain. They put me on the pill and today I've had quite a few big-ish blood clots. I think it may be from the pill but that seems a bit strange since I have only taken one so far. But it also may be just a really bad period. I got blood tested for anaemia today.

If your gynecologist says it is normal to have blood clots I would see another dr. It is fairly common, but not normal! There are things that can be done to help with this because it can be hard to function in your daily life with this. If it really is a problem for you go see a dr.

I have that same problem. Tonight I had blood oozing down my leg. I had to run inside and the blood clots were horrible. Normally I have heavy periods anyway but I'm also anemic and have low hemoglobin. I guess now I can tell the doctor why. My periods are just awful. So I understand how you feel. It sucks. But definitely tell your doctor if you're concerned. It's better safe than sorry I always say.

Blood Clots are normal for the first few days of the cycle. If you look it up blood clots is only the unfertilized egg coming out in large pieces. So don't be nervous unless you have a history of problems regarding your period or you have a painful period
