2 months late with period

Asked Mar 7, 2012, 04:47 PM — 3 Answers
I had my IUD removed in July 2011. I was getting my periods as per normal. Though this year its different. The last time I got my period was in Jan 2012. I am 2 months (8 weeks) late with my period. I am constantly tired, have headaches and very fussy with what I want to eat. The problem is my partner and I aren't trying. I didn't think that he was able to make a child because of his heart condition and a handfull of pills he takes on a daily basis. I have taken two tests and they were both negative. I plan on going to the doctors to see what is going next week. Does any one have any advice or suggestions?

Hi alana.f.....welcome to AMHD,

You are doing exactly what you can do....seeing your doctor. They will do a urine test in office and possibly a blood test as well. Your doctor will check for possible pregnancy, but also other possible reasons for a lack of periods as there can be a number of causes besides pregnancy.

Most people get tested for pregnancy too early, when in reality those tests only work on girls two to three months into their pregnancy. I wouldn't rule out that possibility yet

You are correct in that many people test too early, but this is often before they have even missed a period. Home pregnancy tests are actually quite accurate when used as directed. Many are the same as what would be used in a doctor's office. They will vary from brand to brand as to their sensitivity, so that can sometimes play a role in how early a positive result may show.

Certainly there are some women who will not get a positive on a urine test for quite some time, but the majority of women will as soon as a period is missed.
