    Wireless for laptop
I have a laptop computer with an available slot for a pc card. I plan to go DSL on my desktop which will have a router. What type of card do I need for my laptop? An ethernet card? Network card?
Also, I've been told that this card needs to be removed each time I shutdown the computer. Is this true and if so, why? I would like to put in in and leave it there to keep it safe and secure.
    Thanks. Kay

Why do you say that a network card have to be taken out every time. My company has many laptop users and they leave their cards in all the time. No problem with that. In fact, costant taking out and slotting in would damage the pins in the PCMCIA slot of your laptop.

Regarding your DSL network, I believe that a normal network card will do. Try getting those 10/100mb/s kind and also get those reliable ones (like 3com, etc).

Thank you for your answeres to my questions. I had a hard time believing you should remove the PCMCIA cards also, so it is good to know it is OK to leave them in.
You have been very helpful. Thanks again. :D

The reason you may have heard this is that most laptop PCMCIA wireless cards stick out from the slot. So, to prevent damage to the antenna, you may be advised to remove it.

If you want to go wireless, you need a 802.11 Card. If you haven't gotten your router yet, I would recommend getting an 802.11G router with compatible PCMCIA card.

Thank you. At least now I have a possible reason for the person telling me to remove it. I'll make sure I don't get one with an antenna that sticks out. I would rather leave it in for safekeeping.

I don't have anything yet, so the router info is appreciated.

    Thanks again.
