Choppy connection after laptop being away from house or turned off

When my laptop leaves my house or is turned off for an extended amount of time, it is very hard to connect back and stay connected to the internet.

When i do get a connection, it does not last long at all. Sometimes i will get a message about my adapter being incompatable with my network. AFter diagnosing the problem, i connect but, again, not for very long.

This occurs in both linux and windows.

This problem is usually fixed with a reset of the modem, however, it does not seem to be working in this instance.
