windows 98 no recovery Disk

I was given a Compaq Presario 7470 that is messed up, it needs everything you could think of. When first turning it on it would reboot over and over. Finally I got passed that but now I am getting a invalid messege
"Invalid Vxd dynamic link call from NTMAphlp(02)+00000002 to device "004F"
My configuration is invalid and I am prompted to run the windows setup program again. What is windows setup program? I have looked into the device Manager and the system configuration. Am I missing something?

I know I am getting closer to solving my probelm I have figured out that its a driver and a program creating this messege but I don't know how to find which set it is. the Device "004F" was a program that I removed but the Ntmaphlp(02) has me stumped. Does anyone know how to find out what it is?

And my next question is, is there a way to run the cd drive in safe mode so I can get the updated info on to the computer without having to do a system restore with no 98 back up disk. And there is no restore piont the computer collected dust for a good 2 years before I got to it.
Thank you for caring about us clueless people.

Do you have a recovery CD with this machine? Is there anything on the computer that you need to keep? If not I would just do a full restore from CD (or recovery partition if it has one).

if i remember right 98 never had restore points...i would ask around if anyone has a 98se or millenium disk laying around

neither need to be registered so there is no issue with licenses like XP

the driver for that model should be at the compaq website
