sound device problems

hi am having a problem with no sound on my "callwave Voice Mail". Have gone over it with several of their techs, all have different ideas of what the problem is, I've checked, unchecked, downloaded, unstalled more than I knew exhisted on this machine and still no sound. Don't know if it matters but my CD's play fine in the CD player. The message I get is as follows: We're sorry your callwave software can't access the sound device because another application is using the sound device. Please exit any programs that may be using your sound device. Click on help for further instruction. Help: other programs that may be using the sound device are real player, media player, micro soft cd player and many others. You must exit or stop these programs in order to play your messages. OK as far as I know I have nothing else running that is using the sound device, I spoke with the people who do my repairs they said "thats your entire system" no help there. If something else is running how do I find out what it is and stop or exit it. I have clicked on close or exit on everything in my task bar (down where the start button is) and still same message. Don't know that it matters but the sounds on my notifiers for Incredimail no longer work either. I contacted Incredimail several weeks ago but they haven't responded. I also got the following message a few times: MCI error MMSYSTEM320 all wave devices are in use try again when a device is free. Again what devices???
Thanks december I am using Windows 98

well when that happens something usually is using the sound device. hit Alt-Ctrl-Delete buttons all at the same time. kill processes that dont say SYSTEM next to them and not explorer.exe(Win XP) and for win 95-98 all except explorer and i think it was systray. And try running the program again. Sometimes programs like realplayer and quicktime or some other sound programs have programs running in the back ground that may make a nother program think the sound card is allready in use.
