Depends on which version and whether you want an Upgrade version or full version.

First, you didn't answer my question about WHICH version of Win 7. There are four; Start, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. You can find out more about the differences between each at Microsoft's WEB site.

Second, to upgrade from XP to Win 7 you will need to do a clean install. This means wiping out the hard drive so you will need to back up all your data and make sure you have all your program installation disks and files.

Third, have you checked your laptop for compatibility with Win 7? You can do that on Microsoft's WEB site:
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

Finally, I wouldn't have a clue where the best price is in your city. But there are several places where you can get them online.

Thank you.
I am actually not aware of the benefits/differences of the four ie. Start, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. The URL seems to be handy to understand the necessities for my desktop.
Your suggestion is well taken regarding - upgrade from XP to Win 7 you will need to do a clean install. This means wiping out the hard drive so you will need to back up all your data and make sure you have all your program installation disks and files.
I must understand the whole issue, take a back up and then decide which one is to be loaded.
One thing more. My PC has 4 partitions. My Documents is in Partition D and not in C whereas the Programs are in partition C. Will it be necessary to take a back up of all files/folders in the partitions D, E, F alongwith those in C?

I would still take the backup, but if you install Win 7 onto C, it should leave the files in the other partitions alone.

As to the difference between the versions, again, you can find details at microsoft.com/win7

Thank you very much for explanationing.

Just one more question. I have been practically working on computers without theoretical knowledge since Wordstar was available. I have only heard but do you feel that Win 7 is better than Vista? Is it a better option? I will look into the differences of the Versions only once you have answered me. Thanks again for your help.
