Office Delayed Opening

Office Delayed Opening

When I double click on a xls or doc my the current explorer window locks up.
I can do other things on the PC while this window hangs. When I close the explorer window my screen goes to background image only then in a few seconds it restores.

Suggestions?

XP Pro SP2 and all the latest updates.
