Why not? Have you tried pressing F8 continuously as you boot to get to the boot menu? Then choose boot to a command prompt?

Hello, Scot. When I turn the computer ochoosn, the display comes up with the 6 options and with opt 5 (Command prompt only) highlighted. Lower down is: "Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Choose, Command prompt only, and run SCANREG:. Below that is "The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS:. A similar message is repeated for DBLBUFF and IFSHLP. The final line is "Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM". When I type the last line (w/o the e.g. of course), then press ENTER, everything repeats ad infinitum!

There's the rub! I cannot locate my Win 98 disk so far - given that this is an old (real old) Compaq tower I'm trying to bring back up to speed for use in another location. However, I will continue the search and also check with relatives/friends who may have one or even a suitable boot-up/recovery disk, if that might do the job.

Thanks for your inputs to date.
Regards, Larry Cunningham, Old WWII Corsair Pilot.
