There are two ways you can go about doing this (possibly more, but these seem to be the most efficent)

    1. Right-click on "My Computer" and select manage
    2. Expand Services and Applications on the left hand side
    3. Click on Services so that it is highlighted
    4. On the right hand side a huge list of a bunch of different services should show up
    5. Scroll through the list until you find Windows Live Messenger
    6. Right-Click on it and select properties
    7. In the middle of the properties windows there should be a drop down list for startup type
    8. select disabled and hit apply and it should prevent it from starting up on boot up

You should also be able to disable it from starting up from within Windows Live Messenger itself.

    1. sign on to windows live messenger
    2. click the down arrow that lets you select online, busy, away, etc. and go to the bottom and select "options"
    3. Choose the "general" tab
    4. uncheck the box beside, "Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows.
    5. Click the 'Accept' button.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for your answer. By search, I found by pressing the Atl key to display the Tools after openning the Windows Live Messenger. Don't understand why the Microsoft wants to play this tricky but has caused incontinence to the user.
