Can't reinstall XP - computer powers off

OK, I either made a major mistake, but i can't get it.
i had a dual boot of Win XP & win98 se. it was running very slow so i decided to fromat it.
i have formattd my hard drive with windows 98 start up disk, with three partiotion c,d e
of fat32 type.C drive is set active partition.

then i have installed windows 98 se it works.though some application won't work.
so i decided to install win XP pro. Here is the problem.

I insert the XP disk into the CD , it asks me to do a clean install not a upgrade on 98. XP examines the hardware config., loads various drivers, starts windows, gives me a screen with three options on which drive to install, and powers off before I can choose any option.

I have tried all the possible combinations . I have not gone to Microsoft.

Any ideas anyone?

Thank You.
