Hey everyone my computer just froze and the blue screen came up. It was talking about begin dumping physical memory or something like that. I have managed to restart it after it taking a while but I am extremely concerned. My computer is now running very slow what is the problem?? Thanks.

What recent changes have you made to your system ?
When was the last time you did any maintenance on it, including physically blowing the dust out ?

What were you doing and what was running when this happened ?

There are a lot of factors with a BSoD, so the more information you can give the better we can assist.

I have not made any changes today as far as I am aware.
I changed hardisks a few months back and its been fine.
I was on RuneScape - the massive online adventure game by Jagex Ltd on the forums.

The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) actually listed off a bunch of information that might've led to understanding which driver in your system had catastrophically failed.

A few comments:

If the BSOD was caused by a change in your system, the change didn't have to come from yesterday, it could've been weeks ago and this was the first time enough stress was applied to your system to expose a problem
BSOD while surfing graphic INTENSE sites isn't actually all that scary. You were on the forums, which should've been harmless, but had you played any of that game earlier at all?
Make sure your system has the most up-to-date video drivers.
- Right-click on My Computer, select PROPERTIES
- Click on HARDWARE > DEVICE MANAGER
- Click on DISPLAY ADAPTERS
- Double-click your video adapter to open the PROPERTIES
- Click on DRIVER > UPDATE DRIVER (this will attempt an automatic update)
- Note the driver release date and version #, go onto the web and search for the driver name and check to see if you REALLY do have the latest version. If not, download it from the manufacturer's website and install it.
- Repeat this process for every entry in your Display Adapters
BSOD is an indication of a problem, but a single BSOD may not be. Don't fret it too much unless you start experiencing them regularly. Windows is a memory/bloat hog, it's got issues.
Keep your hard drive healthy:
- Open up My Computer and right-click on Drive C
- Select PROPERTIES > TOOLS
- Run the Error-checking tool find hard drive errors
- Run the Defrag tool periodically
If BSOD start to occur more frequently, make note of what you're doing EACH TIME and look for a pattern. Also, write down the error message or take a picture of it.

If you really only had the ONE BSOD, I'd relax a little. There may be nothing here at all to fix.

Yer I did have runescape running as well so maybe it was something to do with that? I have deleted a folder that had runescape cache in and have updated lots of things. I also installed service pack 3 on my computer. It is running fine atm so I hope it doesn't happen again thanks.

Ok sorry but scrap that. I came on agen this morning and the same thing happened again. I restarted it it came up with the loading screen where it says about 3 ports etc. Then at the bottom it says Drive 0 not found: Serial ATA, SATA - 0. F1 - Continue, F2 - Setup utility. Neither of these worked it just froze. So after this I restarted again and now it is working. Please help. Hmm, I'd be concerned at this point, too. BSOD and hardware not found messages aren't automatically related. You could have multiple issues here and not even realize it.

Can you open your case? The most troubleshooting step when hardware is randomly "not found" is to open the case and recheck ALL the cabling. The data cables and power cables, firmly set them all back into place. While you're in there use a can of air to clear out ALL the dust and debris in the case, do it well.

Next, you said "I came on again this morning." What does that mean?

You went onto the Runescape site and it crashed?
You started your computer fresh this morning and it crashed?
You're computer was running all night long and had already crashed during the night sometime?
You were on a Runescape session last night and left the computer on and it crashed when you tried to use it this morning?

See, there are a lot of possibilities to a statement like that. Describe your computer usage yesterday all the way up to when you went to bed. Did you shut the system down, leave anything running all night, what? More detail is better when looking for patterns in situations like this.

I used to play an online game and when I used my wife's computer, this would start happening. I eventually developed the habit of restarting that computer whenever I ended a gaming session and that seemed to help.

As I said, this could be hardware related, too and you haven't seen the end of it. Fingers crossed.

Yes I logged on this morning and it happened when I had logged onto my user account. I was thinking that it might be a hardware related issue as well but I am not sure.

I think it may be getting worse. This time I was just on msn and the screen froze, I got an error message saying: Windows - System Error Unknown Hard Error. I restarted the computer and CHKDSK came up and now I am back on. I also play xbox live and my account got hacked on it the other day but I have now got it back, this uses windows live messenger which I always have open. Could this be linked??

Everything could be linked. Viruses can do just about anything, including destabilizing your system completely.

Is this a desktop?
How old is the system?
You up for a Windows reinstall if it come to that?

How old is the system? Erm the computer is just over a year old I think.
You up for a Windows reinstall if it come to that? If I have to yes done that once to many though.

I downloaded and ran the BurnInTest program, let it run on my system for about 20 minutes... it simulates high stress burn in activity on all your computer components simultaneously and reports any errors. Could be useful for seeing where your system is acting flaky.

Did you run that error-check on your hard-drive(s)?

Also I am having serious problems getting the computer on it keeps getting stuck on the black loading screen where it gives the details. :(

SIDE NOTE: You can use a free program call CCLEANER to do the same thing the one you used will do, and CCLEANER is free.

BACK TO BUSINESS: OK, the program you used scanned the computer's SOFTWARE. The one I suggested is designed to test your HARDWARE.

I'm worried that you may be experiencing a HD crash. Did you run the error-check on your drive like I suggested?

Further, a HD failing can show like your situation, and once the HD is cleaned up and bad sectors marked out, etc, you may still have a munged XP install and need to reinstall that anyway as a final treatment.

BUT, we don't want to do that until/unless we're confident the hard drive is usable.

I am back on for the time being, I opened up the computer and we cleaned it very well. IT WAS VERY DUSTY!!! Also I have run CCleaner but I need to know what this error check thing is please.
