Here are some basic estimates, keeping in mind these would be for the average walker.

Walking slowly 20-25 min per mile
Walking Briskly 17-20 min per mile
Walking Fast 13-17 min per mile
Jogging 13-19 min per mile
Running 5-9 min per mile

Also, if you would like, there are an average of 1760 to 2640 steps per mile.

Again, these are all just averages.

Hello Noir !

A typical walking speed is 3 M per hour. So the time to walk one Mile is 1/3 hour, or 20 minutes.

However, at 252 Pounds and at 57 years, the typical speed is reduced by at least 30%, so from 3 M to 2 M per hour. So the time to walk one Mile at that speed becomes now around 30 minutes.

If it is very warm, just take another 10 more minutes. Better to arrive safely and healthy !

Enjoy the walk !

John, while walking will help you, you need to get your diet right to lose significant weight. A good diet is what will make you lose weight, exercise will make you look good when you do lose it.

Walk as much as you can, and stay active. Concentrate on getting fitter, and doing each mile faster, rather than trying to calculate how many miles you need to walk to lose weight.

At 57 and 252, you shouldn't worry too much about how long it'll take you to walk a mile. You should be more focused on finishing a mile. A mile on a typical high school track is 4 laps.

Find a local high school/college campus and walk on the tracks (they are usually open after school hours and during the weekends) and focus on finishing a mile (4 laps) and increase your laps by one each day if 4 laps become too easy.

You'll have to ask your doctor what would be a reasonable goal for you in the circumstances. Obviously a knee and hip replacement will make a difference. I can say that for a healthy woman of your age, a mile in 20 minutes would be a good target. If you are walking with a stick etc, that's going to slow you down.
