Here are some basic estimates, keeping in mind these would be for the average walker.

Walking slowly 20-25 min per mile
Walking Briskly 17-20 min per mile
Walking Fast 13-17 min per mile
    Jogging 13-19 min per mile
    Running 5-9 min per mile

Also, if you would like, there are an average of 1760 to 2640 steps per mile.

Again, these are all just averages.

    Hello Noir !

A typical walking speed is 3 M per hour. So the time to walk one Mile is 1/3 hour, or 20 minutes.

However, at 252 Pounds and at 57 years, the typical speed is reduced by at least 30%, so from 3 M to 2 M per hour. So the time to walk one Mile at that speed becomes now around 30 minutes.

Consider your weight and your age : do not overrate your capacities.
If it is very warm, just take another 10 more minutes. Better to arrive safely and healthy !

    Enjoy the walk !

    :)

John, while walking will help you, you need to get your diet right to lose significant weight. A good diet is what will make you lose weight, exercise will make you look good when you do lose it.

Walk as much as you can, and stay active. Concentrate on getting fitter, and doing each mile faster, rather than trying to calculate how many miles you need to walk to lose weight.

At 57 and 252, you shouldn't worry too much about how long it'll take you to walk a mile. You should be more focused on finishing a mile. A mile on a typical high school track is 4 laps.

Find a local high school/college campus and walk on the tracks (they are usually open after school hours and during the weekends) and focus on finishing a mile (4 laps) and increase your laps by one each day if 4 laps become too easy.

It ISN'T always about time. Sometimes it's simply about JUST FINISHING.

I am a 70 year old woman and I weigh 210 what should be my walking goal I an not very active.
I have had a knee replacement and a hip replacement.

You'll have to ask your doctor what would be a reasonable goal for you in the circumstances. Obviously a knee and hip replacement will make a difference. I can say that for a healthy woman of your age, a mile in 20 minutes would be a good target. If you are walking with a stick etc, that's going to slow you down.

Problem with this question is this... Say you are told "It takes 30 minutes exactly for someone of your age and weight to walk a mile." Now you are going to go outside and walk for exactly 30 minutes, call it good enough and go back inside. The amount of time really shouldn't be an issue to you. Instead of sitting at your computer asking this try going outside and actually walk a mile in your neighborhood. Then you will know. The amount of time it takes should be the least of your worries. Worry about your obesity and doing something to help yourself first. Then worry about how much this is going to inconvenience you.

I am seventy years old and weigh 164 pounds at 5 foot 8 inches in height. I walk every day about two miles briskly. Yesterday I walked 8 miles but that was it. I am going to Spain to walk The Walk of St. James. It is about 15-18 miles a day. I am in good health. Can I do this?

"I am a 300lb male and I would like to loose 70 lbs how many miles a day would have to walk on average day to loose those 70 lbs"

The fastest way to lose weight is to work out in the gym and gain muscle. I say this because muscle burns fat and calories faster than fat, by a lot. Also if you are drinking pop a lot and greasy foods try to stay away from them. Lots of bad health effects. I encourage you to still eat meat and enjoy the occasional treat but really get a work out program going. The hardest part of working out I know is getting to the gym... It was for me and a lot of other unmuscular people. So here are some stuff you should know. When you go to the gym know that everyone there is thinking about themselves they are thinking about you. You are going to the gym for you and you only. Just go to the gym.. you will be happily surprised by no one caring about you, and working out makes you feel great. I hope this helps you and let me know if you see something wrong with my suggestion.

The fastest way to lose weight is not to work out in the gym, it is to eat less.

Only by eating less and managing your calorie intake will you lose weight quickly. Exercise will help and will improve muscle tone, which as helper2012 says, will burn calories and fat more quickly.

If you get your weight down by dieting, it will be easier for you to exercise as you will be moving less weight around. The easier the exercise, the more you are likely to do it and continue with it. Ideally a combination of weight bearing exercise plus some stamina building such as walking, jogging, cycling or swimming is ideal, but go with whatever you find enjoyable.

To be honest, if you weigh 300lbs you will need to check with your doctor before undertaking any strenuous exercise such as going to the gym. Walking is a good, fairly gentle exercise which will not put your health at risk but will help you maintain a healthy weight, will improve your general fitness and reduce your risk of coronary heart disease. Getting outside in the fresh air rather than inside a gym will also improve your well-being.

Patch, 8 miles is pretty good at your age! But sustaining long distances day after day is tricky. I can walk 25 miles in a day, without too much trouble but to walk 15 miles a day, day after day after day is much harder. The Way of St James is a very long walk! I assume you are not doing the whole distance? Walking 15 miles a day for two weeks will mean you cover 200 miles, that is more than enough for most people!

Your legs will tire and stiffen and if your feet get sore they have no time to rest if you are walking daily. Much better if you can, to walk one day, one day rest.

You can do it, but you will need to train so that you can walk for 10 to 12 miles every day for 3 or 4 consecutive days. Even for a fit, younger person, daily walking of more than 15 miles needs a lot of stamina, so eat well and get plenty of sleep each night.

debn99, I am a very fit walker, regularly doing 20 mile walks plus challenge walks and mountain walks. On average I walk 100 miles a month, 150+ in spring and summer.
I walk much faster than many of my friends and my average is between 15 - 17 minutes per mile depending on terrain, obviously mountain walking is much slower.
I cannot believe you can sustain 12 minutes per mile, that is a jogging speed! Or your pedometer is faulty. I use a Garmin GPS unit to accurately measure my distance and speed, many of the simpler pedometers are inaccurate.
Personally I believe it is very difficult for a non-athlete to sustain a WALKING speed of greater than 4 miles per hour over any significant distance. 3 miles an hour (20 minutes per mile) is a realistic speed for a person of average fitness on level ground. 3.5 to 4 miles an hour is fast walking and most people would get out of breath walking at that speed for any distance.
