Big Emergency!

Asked Mar 14, 2008, 08:19 AM — 11 Answers
Greetings All,

I really need some help or advice about my weight. I am currently morbidly obese. I am 5ft 9 inches tall and would estimate my weight to be between 600-700 pounds. It could be less, prayerfully not more but I cannot find a scale that goes high enough to weigh myself. I don't have the health insurance to pay for any kind of weight loss surgery. I have constant pain in my knees which severely limits my walking. I have been told by my doctor that my knees are probably bone on bone but there is no MRI that is big enough for me to fit in to confirm it. I take about 4 different types of pain pills which don't help too much. I need to know what type of exercises a person of my size can do at home. I am going to start the Atkins diet (meat and vegetables no carbs) which I have had success with in the past but ultimately got away from. I know part of my problem is the fried foods and potato chips, not enough vegetables and leafy greens along with soda. I really want to commit myself to this diet and exercise program but I don't know what type of exercises that might help a person of my size since things like situps, push ups and jumping jacks and running or jogging are out of the question.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Fried foods and chips are like about the worst you can do.

10 potato chips equals about the same as 1 potato and who just eats 10 chips?

Sweets and donuts-I was doing weights for one month and lost 10 to 15 pounds
I was moving the next month and not working out. No time for a good breakfast
Ate ONE doughnut every morning for one month and gained every single pound back.

When I quit drinking soda for at least a month that alone is between a 6 to 10 pounds loss
But when I start drinking it again it is right back on.

I heard that the Atkins diet is something you should not do for more than one or two months at most.

Most diets are only a temporary fix and you gain the weight back when you are done with the diet. You need a lifestyle change in eating habits.
Eat good home cooked meals with the freshest foods you possibly can.
Like pick fresh or frozen vegetables over canned.
Pick real cheese over anything with powered cheese.
Eat high fiber-whole wheat and whole grain
Also use the oils from the section with the olive oil rather than the crisco/wesson section
Pick juices like POM juice, Looza nectar, After the Fall, are. W. Knudsen,

Give up junk food, fast food and prepackaged foods
Many of them have additives that make you want more and cause your body to put on the pounds.
Also food nowadays is processed so that most of the nutrients are lacking.
They pick fruits and vegetables before they are ripe and then cook them until the enzymes are cooked out. So it is good to take an enzyme like one of these Enzymes / Digestive Enzymes / Enzyme Supplements

Some people believe that the hormones that animals are feed are causing people to be overweight to so it is best to cut down on the meat and/or buy free range.

I have no idea what exercises would be best for you but
I think the burst exercises are suppose to be good
Or the weight machines.

Hello blimp:

If it were me, I'd check out bariatric surgery. I'd find some way to pay for it, or find some doner - maybe your church. I don't know. I think your health is at risk. If you looked, I'm sure you can find SOME program that could pay for it.

Yes, you have a serious issues with your health, your doctor should have a diet plan for you, and in your case diet pills most likely to help.

In the end, you have to follow a very very strict diet. Next at your weight a lot of exercise is going to be limited to what you can physcially do, watlking is a start,

Please stop suggesting this patch. Pills and patches don't work. Diet and exercise does. And this man has a serious health issue and suggesting a patch is not the answer.

I agree with excon and fr_chuck. Find someone that will help or fully pay for your surgery. I think that is your best bet (to start the weight loss process). You can check out the local Lyon's club, a local hospital (to see if they have some sort of program), churches. All sorts of things. And if all else fails, get the surgery, and make monthly payments. Your health and your life are priceless. Don't let the $$ prevent you from getting healthy and living your life. I know its easier said than done.

Please update us. We would love to know how you are progressing.

However I think some healthy eating will help you to lose a lot of weight quicker...to start out

As for the patch, it looks like someone is advertising, I will take a look into it.

Bariatric Surgery is not for everyone. Especially, if there are other health risks involved. Yet, the laproscopic procedure that many experienced Gastro guys do now-a-days, is successful and done instead of the past "open" surgery. It does however require general anethesia, which may or may not be a factor in your care.
It will require you to follow a diet plan after surgery as well. Either way.
It is advisable that you speak and reach out to others who have undergone the surgery. And speak with a nutritionist.
If surgery is not an option for you, than there are other alternative measures that you can investigate. The most important is that you are reaching out for help. And that in and of itself can be quite a challenge for many in your situation.
Keep reaching out for help and assistance. There will always be someone who understands what you are going through or even what personal experience you may be challenged with, that will be able to help you find your own resolution.
