i was the flower girl at my uncles wedding when i was like 5 and they gave me a gold necklace. i still have and cherish it to this day.

I think I know what you mean. The child is in the wedding party, is that it ? Then a piece of jewellery as a keepsake is appropriate, but not money to a child.
