    Do you now need a passport to travel within the united states?
    I am going on vacation in march with my boyfriend and he said he heard that after jan. 1 2007 you need a passport to travel within the usa. IS THAT TRUE?:confused:

    No its not true. However, you do now, need a passport if you are traveling by air to Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean. This was not always required before. You can still cross the Mexican or Canadian borders by car without a passport.

    Just to add to Scott's answer a bit.

    As he said, yes, you now need a passport to travel by AIR or SEA to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean.

    And as of June 30, 2009 (but possibly as early as Jan 1, 2008), you will need a passport to cross those borders by car.

    But to travel by plane from one US state to another, does NOT require a passport now, nor in the future.
