touch pad scrolling glitch

I have a Compaq Presario C304NR notebook. It runs Windows XP and is equipped with a touch pad that has lines on the bottom and sides for touch scrolling. The touch scrolling works great everywhere except when I open an email message in Outlook Express 6. I have downloaded the newest version of the driver, and that hasn't helped. It is a Synaptics TouchPad Pointing Device v10.0.13.2. Thanks for any help.

is the scroll feature not working at all or is it just jumpy in outlook? the reason i ask is outlook is a big program especially if you have a huge mail box and could just be making your scroll unsmooth because of a lack of system resources. so a little more info would be good.

Please share your system specs; be sure to include processor, ram, OS, free drive space, and whether or not you overclock.

Please, please stop using outlook 'security nightmare' express. There are many other great free options:

Thunderbird - Reclaim your inbox (optionally with https://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope_Extensions)

Pegasus Mail

Essentials - Windows Live (not as awesome but very microsoft)

Ajax email client: Open Source collaboration software (yahoo)

excellent payware options

RITLabs. The Bat! Email Client

The scroll feature works just fine (smooth, not jumpy) everywhere except in the body of an opened email message in Outlook Express. I can put the cursor in the area above the body of the message, up in the listing of messages, and the scroll works just fine. When I move it down into the body of an individual message, it doesn't work.. It also works just fine on internet sites.

I have a an Intel Celeron M Processor 420 (1.6HGz, 1MB L2 cache, 533 MHz SB) 512MB system memory. Windows XP, 44.8GB free disk space, and I don't have a clue what "overclock" is.

Thanks.

I'm guessing your running low on system resources, to check this hold ctrl+shift+esc to bring up task manager. go to performance tab, now scroll in the body of a message and go quickly back to task manager and look at your cpu and pf usage. tell me the % of cpu being used right after you scroll in outlook.

pf was 530MB, cpu usage was already showing 100% before I scrolled, so it didn't change. Right now, I happen to have a window open that is downloading updates from HP, but the scrolling issue happens on this computer every time I use OE, regardless of how many windows I have open. And why is it only in the email program?

Anyway, is there an easy solution? Thanks.

I just tried closing everything down, and my cpu usage was still at 100%.

So, I shut down my computer, let it rest a couple of minutes, and started back up. My cpu usage shows 100% with just my desktop showing. No programs open. It says I have 46 processes running before I had opened anything. Does that give you anything else to go on?

Thank you.

Yeah it sounds to me like your scrolling issue is coming from the fact that you have no resources left to use as outlook is a very big program.
(all links will be at end of post)
Now your REAL problem is virus's and spyware. Here is what to do.
Download Avast!(program name) its an antivirus software/antispyware and so much more offering realtime protection for free. Install it and run it.

download both spybot and adaware, install and run both. this should clear up a lot of resources. after you run these 2 programs make sure to turn off any sort of auto start feature on them as your system is so old you will notice a difference in performance. For the virus protection make sure it is set to auto update and all features are on.

when done with this let me know results/if it fixed your issue. but i think minimum you will see a dramatic improvement in how fast your PC runs.

before I try your suggestions, here's a couple more questions.
First, I already have Trend Micro Internet Security loaded on this computer and ran a full scan last night. it didn't find anything significant, and CPU is still at 100% with nothing running. Are your anti spyware/virus/adware programs better? or do they do something different? or is mine OK?

Next, this whole scrolling issue seemed to have started when my husband got a new computer after Christmas, and tried to hook it into our wireless network. I'm getting in over my head here, but he had trouble finding the access code for the router to load into the new computer, and somehow in getting that all resolved, issues seemed to come up on this machine too. Maybe coincidence, or not? Does that give you any other ideas?

Also, just discovered this morning that if we plug in the wireless mouse into this laptop, the scrolling works just fine in OE. it's only when we use the scrolling pad that it doesn't work right. And, I've already reinstalled the driver.

Give me your feedback, and I'll go from there. Thanks.

I cant think of any reason issues with a router would cause your pc to slow down(though it being a PC it doesnt always react logically :P)

OK firtly Avast is hands down the best anti virus program on the market, it takes first place almost every single year, the fact that you can use it free makes it even better. One virus scanner may not always find everything you have, when i switched from AVG to avast it found one that AVG had missed, and its a rather good scanner as well. The other two programs do something slightly diffrent but related to virus software, and again its best to use two because one might miss something the other one finds.

If scroll works fine on another mouse its probably a driver issue, if you have the latest driver nothing can be done other than getting a different e-mail program. (id recommend firefox's thunderbird). but do the above steps first, it may solve the issue, if it doesnt then your SOL on the issue other than A another driver update from the manufacture or B a new email program.
