missing multimedia audio controller, no sound!

I have seen some post on this topic on this forum, but none of them can solve my question><...I have an HP Pavillion w5048. Recently I reformatted the pc due to some reasons. I do not have the bundled software or the system recovery disk from HP since my auntie gave me this pc. I installed Windows XP Pro on it. I now have two question marks in other devices in the device manager. I am missing the Multimedia Audio Controller and a thing that says pci. Obviously I have no sound. I have been searching everywhere for the drivers. The sound card is on board.
where ever i tried on the pc, it says that i have no sound device installed in the computer. everything works fine. is there any ways that i could get a recovery cd from hp in New Zealand if that helps? i just hope i can get the sounds working again.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
btw,,, im not sure about the date of purchase because it is my auntie's pc, and that is why i don't have anything from hp with me.
