5hp briggs needs priming when it shouldn't

my motor needs a little gas in the carb to start. it won't start without it. why. is it that the carb needs adjusting.

Does this carb also have a choke, probably not. Priming the engine gives a very rich mix of gas similar to choking so it will start more easily. If the engine runs fine once it has warmed up them leave the adjusting out. Only adjust a warmed up runnig engine, unless you don't mind doing it more than once.

if the engine fires up within three pulls of the rope when you have primed it, then does as ballengerb1 stated and runs fine, leave it alone. my rule of thumb is if you pull more than three times, it needs further investigation and repair.
