Troy-Bilt riding mower quits

My 1997 troy-bilt mower quits running when I disengage the break and/or engage the mower.

I've been told it was a safety switch.

Any tips..?

yes it sounds like a safety switch, you can go about getting around it by taking the kill switch off the ignition coil, but i would get it fixed, safety switch's are there for a reason.
