Tiller not firing

Asked Jul 13, 2010, 09:57 PM — 5 Answers
I have a john deere tiller with a tecumseh h60-75389j. Replaced points, cond., and coil. Connected in line tester (glow tester) between coil wire and installed spark plug and no spark. Disconnected tester from plug and grounded to engine and I have great spark. Magnets on flywheel are strong and I completely removed kill switch wire to eliminate that. Please help. Thanks, Kevin

Bad plug.

You can do it the hard way. Remove plug. Connect spark plug wire. Hold base of plug against bare metal of engine with a wooden block. Check for fire.

Take out the glow tester and just look for spark the hard way.

I once tried on of those E3 plugs and no spark. They have a gap internal to the plug. The spark tester may have the same.

Eliminate the spark tester.

Remember that firing in air will be weaker than in the engine.

Picked up two new plugs today and tried them just for the heck of it and still nothing. 100% sure no fire is going through the plug. Any other help is appreciated, my brain is really hurting! Your probably replying in the wrong box. Use "Answer this question" or whatever it is on the new skin. Apparently it's not the reply button.

OK, I lost what I typed when AMHD hiccuped.

Check the spark plug wire at the boot.

Make sure the coil isn't installed upside down.

Check resistances of the secondary while flexing the HV wire.

Make sure the coil connections have a good ground.

Lightly sand the magnets.

Set the magneto gap with an index card.

Hi,
Your original question as stated says that there is a problem with the plug or its ground. That is the logical extension of the facts. Those E3 plugs will not work in OPE. I have given brand new ones back to customers with running machines that had nothing but it replaced.
Peace,
Clarke
