snapper mower starts and stalls

I've had issues with this mower starting going back to the end of 2006 when I bought a new battery. The mower would click when I turned the key, but not start. The new battery got me through the rest of that season. When spring came, it wouldn't start, so I used my portable charger to jump start it. It ran fine for a couple weeks. Then I had to jump it again. Fine awhile, then jump. Then it got to the point where I was jumping it every use. This year started the same way, until yesterday when after jumping it ran about a minute and cut out. I tried again and again. It started, ran, and cut out, all with the boost of a jump. What do I need to fix this?

you could have a bad short somewhere, a faulty stator, or a bad battery.
