Is it possible for a cam not to turn if the timing belt is not broke on a 97 escort?
    Hello,

My escot brokedown, when it quit, it just spit and spudered and died, almost like it was running out of gas, and wouldn't start back up. And it smelled like burning rubber when it quit, so my thought was the timing belt had broke.

So I took it to my mechanic, who took off the valve cover with me standing there, and all the valves were moving up and down, so he said that the timing belt had probably just slipped.

Then he calls me and tells me that the cam is not turning, that it would either be some kind of bad gear, or the camshaft was broke in half. And that he could fix it, but would have to pull the engine in order to do it.

My question is, Is this possible that the timing belt sliped and the valves go up and down like they should and the cam not turn?

I have a 2.0 splirt port induction engine.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

Either ALL rocker arms/valves go up and down or only some of them. If it's some of them, the cam is broken and it's probably because of the very very common intake valve seat dropping/grenading the engine thing that the 2.0's do.
