MOWERMAN2468 disagrees: todays small engines need 300 cca to perform and provide lasting life to your starter.

and if you use 250cca (cold cranking amps) battery, get ready to purchase a new starter. to give your starter longer life, use at least a 300CCA battery.

because if you think about it, they sell you the lawn mower, then they really make their money on the parts. thats why the manual calls for 250cca battery. think about it. i am just telling you what i know from years of experience and yes we have sold a many of new starters to customers that had a battery that yes was cheaper but only had 250cca. do as you wish, but i would highly reccommend going with a 300cca battery. the briggs starters are around $130.00.
