lawnmower won't start

I have a Craftsman 30" riding lawnmower and it will not start. Gas is ok but I have checked for spark and can't see any. I tried to start it, it fired once and now won't fire. Any ideas?

I figured it out myself---it was low on oil. This engine has a switch that will not allow the engine to start if it is low on oil.

I have never seen a low oil switch on a rider, they are used primarily on power equipment that are subject to extended unmanned run times Generator, Water pump, Air compressor. Lawn Mower? never would have guessed.

Here is my "mower-won't-start" checklist. Someone might find it useful.

Usually such problems are either FUEL related or IGNITION related.

1. Check for any GAS
2. Check oil-clean, right type, and good levels.
3. Check air filter
4. Check spark plug
5. If bad gas is presumed, change it. Bad gas is a common problem.
6. Check mower is getting fuel-stuck throttle..ect.

If I get through my check list without solving the problem, then *I* call for more expert advice. ie repairman

Very good, May I adjust slightly? This time of year it is best to start with fresh fuel. I can not tell you how many times I have been told "It is fresh" when it is water, mixed with last years crud or just plain rancid. People just don't want to believe it could be as simple as that.
