Murray will not engage in gear

I moved the lever that disengages the transmission back & forth but it will not reengage into gear. I got underneath it & I can see that the what I think is a wheel turning when I push the gear forward or backwards but it still will not engage.
Any help welcomed
Garry

mowerman, I was underneath the machine & moving the linkage back & forth & I could see it moving in & out near the transmission but it still wouldn't re-engage the gears. So maybe I am seeing something that I think I am seeing but I am open to anything. good it be the clutch that is not engaging? but if this were the case it would be in gear when I move it back & forth like it is while disenganged.
