Lawnmower pull cord is stuck

When I moved, the movers folded down the handle of my mower. When I took it out of storage, the handle can't unfold completely because the pull cord is stuck. It won't release all of the way. If someone can tell me how to get it to release, then I'll probably be asking questions about why it wont start. Can anyone help?

Your cord needs just a small amount of slack to release and the folding of the handle has screwed that up a bit. Remove the spark plug so there will be no compression to hinder you. If you get tempted to remove the handle from the chord it should work but be 100% sure you have a tight hold on the chord or it will recoil into the housing making your afternoon less fun.

Yes, ballengerb is correct, and if you do allow it to go into the recoil, you can fold out the handle, remove the spark plug, squeeze the brake bail handle, (handle at top of handle bar), and pull the rope out to reinsert it through the eyelet.
