John Deere L110 Solenoid

Asked Oct 29, 2007, 10:41 AM — 2 Answers
My JD L110 is not starting w/some clicking sounds being exhibited attempting to start. There is enough power in the battery for the lights. Jump Starting did nothing. Researching this site is pointing me to the Solenoid. Questions are: Is there a way to test to see if it is the Solenoid? How difficult is it to replace the Solenoid? Any safety concerns?

I use a piece of battery cable about 10" long, bent into a "U" with about 1/2" of insulation stripped off each end, and sitting on the seat, clutch/brake depressed, I touch across the two main posts of the solenoid. If it turns the engine over when I touch both posts, the solenoid is bad. Changing a solenoid is not hard, just change out one wire at a time. Yes there are some safety concerns, disconnect the battery positive posts prior to attempting the repair. The solenoid is located in the vicinity of the fuel tank, or fuel lines and you do not want a spark there. If you disconnect the battery first though, you will not have the arcing sparks.
