Drive Belt for Craftsman Riding Mower

I have a Craftsman riding mower, model 536.270270. I am trying to replace the two main drive belts to the transmission. The lower came off fairly easily. HOw do I get the upper one off? It does not seem to have enough room above the tranny pulley to get the belt off. What am I missing?
