Echo makes a "weed eater" that you install the pre-cut length "strings" yourself. You can actually change the string w/o shutting the trimmer off. Once your finger is off the throttle you just stop the head from spinning by stopping it the grass, then change the strings. Have an Echo trimmer myself. Kind of like it.

you could also buy different heads, some bump feed, others you self feed. as for echo, good brand, but changing the string when running, its gotta have a clutched engine, so don't try it unless it does have a clutch, though it would be more safer to shut it off.
