    Briggs&Stratton won't run w/o choke
There is no water in the fuel, replaced fuel pump diaphragm's and springs. Will start and run with the choke 7/8 closed, as I increase the throttle I can open the choke more until the throttle is wide and the choke is closed. Hellllp.

It is on a 19.5 hp craftsman 42" mower ~ 8 years old.

Sounds like a dirty carb. Your pump was prob fine :p

Make sure to change the needle and the seat. If it didn't have -any- gas in it then it def needs to be changed... I might even change the float along with it. Or you could just buy the whole kit to be safe.

Its back running. I put a kit on the carb. There was some dirt in the carb, maybe the float was stuck in the shut off position! You were probably right about the pump not being the problem, but now it has a new pump kit in it, plus I have an extra which came with the carb kit!

    Thank you for our help.

    Dear sir
I have a weedeater push lawn mower with a 5 Hp Brigg & Stratton Engine will not start.
The spark plug is firing when removed from the engine but will not start.
I have sprayed ether in the carberator but nothing happens.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks,
    Ted

First off Never -ever- spray ether or any Starting fluid type stuff in to a small engine... you can seriously mess your lawnmower up. If you want to see if the carb isn't getting gas just get a small squirt bottle fill it with gas and shoot it in there... If the lawn mower briefy starts up then shuts off you need to clean your carb.

Ok has the lawn mower been sitting up for over a month?

Jrtaub, Glad To Hear You Are Up And Runnig.

Bullock2007, You Can Spray Ether Or Carb Cleaner In A Small Engine, Just Do Not Over Do It. But If You Have Spark, And You Have Tried Ether Or Carb Cleaner To Get It To Start And It Did Not Even Sound Like It Was Trying To Start , Then It Is Quite Simple, You Have An Intake Valve Not Working.

    Bullock,
The Reason I Say It Is The Valve Is Because When You Spray Into The Throat Of The Carb And Nothing Happens, The Only Thing That Is Stopping It From At Least Momentarily Starting Is The Intake Valve Not Opening. Again I Say This Because You Said You Do Have Spark.
