| Lawsuit against 3 Credir Bureaus This post is not a question but for information. An article on 07/02/06 by Kenneth Harney in the Chicago Tribune told of a lawsuit against the 3 bureaus, prompted by a tactic used by Capital One that improperly lowers credit scores. C.O. reports the highest credit used rather than the credit limit on their card. If a person has a $5000 limit and has only used $2500, that lower figure is shown as the credit limit. If the person now has a $2000 balance, the credit scoring mechanism takes that as 80% credit usage rather that the 40% that it should be, thereby lowering the credit score unfairly. Since there is no Federal law governing reporting by creditors, C.O. is not named as a defendant. My advice is to check your reports to see if you are a victim. The article said that 46% of consumers are affected by this practice. |
