rca home threatre sound retrieval system

I was given this tv, believe its 42 or 52 in. and hooked up a dvr and cable with a home panasic theatre. now it has volume but its low and there is a hissing sound. when I use the dvd home threatre the sound is loud and no hissing. help. i know nothing about electronics. thanks.
